The violent lifeworlds of young Haitians Gangs as livelihood in a Port-au-Prince ghetto (The Haiti Youth Project)
This Fafo paper examines how young Haitians in Port-au-Prince's ghettos engage in gangs (baz) as a livelihood strategy, focusing on Operation Baghdad (2004) and post-earthquake dynamics. Based on qualitative interviews, it analyzes motivations including protection, survival, social networks and the distributive functions of baz. The report situates gang mobilization in historical and political context and discusses implications for policing, UN presence and social support. It highlights the risk of renewed instability when public institutions fail to fill social and security roles.
