Palestinian Opinions about Governance, Institutions and Political Leaders Synthesis of Results of Fafo’s Opinion Polls in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, 2005–2011
This Fafo paper synthesizes seven representative household surveys conducted in the West Bank and Gaza Strip from 2005 to 2011 to analyze Palestinian perceptions of leaders, institutions and democracy. It finds generally moderate and relatively stable trust in governmental institutions, high trust in UNRWA, a declining appreciation of President Abbas, and increased short-term appreciation of Prime Minister Fayyad. The report highlights limited freedom of expression, widespread perceptions of corruption, and more negative assessments in Gaza than in the West Bank. Voting preferences remained fairly stable with Fatah consistently more popular than Hamas, despite short-term fluctuations related to key events.
