Improving the safety of cycling in Europe PIN Flash April 2026
This PIN Flash analyses trends in cyclist deaths and serious injuries across Europe up to 2024, showing only an 8% reduction in cyclist deaths between 2014 and 2024 while reported serious injuries increased. The report finds that 65% of cyclist deaths involve collisions with motor vehicles, that older cyclists and men are disproportionately affected, and that e-bikes shape age-related casualty patterns. It highlights wide differences between countries, significant underreporting (especially of single-bicycle crashes), and data gaps on distance cycled. The publication reviews countermeasures across planning, infrastructure, speed management, vehicle and bicycle safety, enforcement and education, and provides recommendations for cities, national governments and the EU.
