Underwater effects of offshore wind farms on marine life – a literature review
Ambitious goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions demand for increased renewable energy. In this context, offshore wind is a promising source of renewable energy production which is developing fast. However, this expansion may come at a cost in terms of impact on the environment. To achieve a sustainable offshore wind sector, it is crucial to assess the ecological risks for marine ecosystems and to minimise negative effects. We conducted a literature search, and we here give an introduction to the field and also take a closer look at the evidence of underwater effects on selected marine organisms, namely plankton, fish, marine mammals, as well as the ecosystem.
