A sense of control: Why rejected asylum seekers move out of reception centres A re-analysis of data from the Fafo study 'No way in, no way out' (2011)
This report is a re-analysis of qualitative interview data from the Fafo project 'No way in, no way out' (2011), funded by the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration. It examines why rejected asylum seekers and irregular migrants choose to move out of reception centres, exploring motives such as avoidance of deportation, search for work, desire for autonomy, and the role of reception centres as instruments of control. The analysis also considers reasons for staying in centres, including access to welfare, family responsibilities and hopes for legal residence. Findings highlight mixed motives and show that moving out is often a strategy to regain control over one's life despite considerable challenges.
