Investigation into the radioecological status of Stepovogo fjord The dumping site of the nuclear submarine K-27 and solid radioactive waste

In 2012, the nuclear submarine K-27 was observed lying upright and clear of bottom sediments at a depth of around 30 m in the outer part of Stepovogo Fjord with no obvious corrosion damage of the outer hull. Based on in situ gamma measurements and the analysis of seawater and sediment samples taken around the submarine, there was no indication of any leakage from the reactor units of K-27. The joint Norwegian-Russian cruise to Stepovogo Fjord in 2012 to investigate the radioecological status of dumping sites for solid radioactive waste and the nuclear submarine K-27 was organized through the Norwegian-Russian expert group for investigation of radioactive contamination in the northern areas. This report presents the results obtained by the joint Norwegian-Russian research cruise in 2012 to investigate the radioecological status of Stepovogo Fjord on the eastern coast of Novaya Zemlya, where the nuclear submarine K-27 and solid radioactive waste has been dumped.
