Thorium as an energy source Opportunities for Norway
This committee report (2008) reviews Norway's thorium resources, the status of technologies for thorium fuel production and nuclear systems, and assesses opportunities and risks for utilising thorium for long-term energy production. It summarises geological occurrences (notably the Fen Complex and Oslo region), mining and processing issues, fuel cycle options, reactor concepts including ADS and MSR, safety, non-proliferation, economic aspects and R&D/education needs. The report was prepared for the Research Council of Norway on behalf of the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy and includes international expert input. It concludes that Norway has potential thorium resources but that targeted exploration and further technological assessment are needed before resource values can be determined.
