Migration and Integration 2021-2022 Report for Norway to the OECD
According to Statistics Norway, net immigration to Norway was only 10,900 in 2020, which was 16,000 less than the previous year, due to a sharp drop in immigration caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The largest number of immigrants came from Poland, followed by Sweden and Lithuania. Family-related immigration accounted for 30% of non-Nordic immigration, while labour migration picked up in 2021 and was back at pre-pandemic levels. There was a low number of applications for asylum in 2021, with a 73% increase in positive decisions by the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration. In 2022, there was a sharp increase in applications for asylum due to the situation in Ukraine, with approximately 40,750 applications filed by the end of the year. Fewer returns, both forced and assisted, occurred in 2021, and Norway continued to implement its immigration and refugee policy.
